Ways to NOT frame a Jersey

Framing Jerseys the Right Way (And What NOT To Do)

We recently had a jersey brought into the studio that had been framed elsewhere — and honestly, its condition was heartbreaking. Instead of preserving the jersey, the framer had cut into the sleeves and shortened the jersey's length by removing the bottom section to make it sit flat in the frame.  This effectively ruined the garment.

The purpose of custom jersey framing is not just to display the item but to protect it from damage and deterioration, therefore a jersey should never be trimmed, stapled, or permanently fixed with adhesive just to make it “look right.”

At Burl by Design, we take particular care with sports jersey framing. Our focus is long-term preservation, reversibility, and the use of industry-standard conservation materials so your jersey stays safe for years to come.

Here’s how we frame jerseys properly:

1. No Staples. Ever.

We never staple jerseys. Staples create permanent holes, can reduce the value of collectible or signed pieces and will eventually rust.

If we need to secure sleeves in position, we use acid-free tapestry tape — never regular double-sided tape that can stain, break down, or damage fabric over time.

2. Foamcore Insert for Structure

Every jersey is fitted with a custom-cut foamcore insert to help it hold its shape. This prevents sagging and keeps the garment looking clean and professional inside the frame.

3. Hand Stitched (Fully Reversible)

All jerseys are carefully hand stitched using acid-free dental floss.

Why dental floss?
It’s strong, gentle on fabric, and completely reversible. That means your jersey can be removed from the frame later without damage — which is especially important for signed, game-worn, or sentimental pieces.

We use the stitching to:

  • Keep the jersey nice and taut

  • Hold sleeves in place

  • Maintain a clean presentation

No glue. No shortcuts.

4. Stitched to Acid-Free Matboard

Once positioned perfectly, the jersey is stitched down to acid-free matboard, keeping everything secure without adhesives touching the garment.

5. Spacers Between Glass and Jersey

We always install spacers between the glass and the jersey.

This:

  • Prevents the fabric from touching the glass

  • Reduces condensation risk

  • Helps prevent mould buildup

  • Improves airflow inside the frame

Proper spacing is essential in professional jersey framing — especially in humid environments.

6. Acid-Free Backing (Never MDF)

We use acid-free foamcore backing, not MDF (a wood-based product).

MDF absorbs moisture and can develop mould over time, which can damage both the jersey and the frame. Conservation-safe materials make all the difference in long-term preservation.

Why Proper Jersey Framing Matters

Whether it’s a signed sports jersey, a game-day memory, or a sentimental keepsake, proper framing protects both its appearance and value.

If your jersey has already been framed and you’re unsure how it was mounted, it may be worth having it checked. Poor framing techniques can cause damage that worsens over time.

At Burl by Design, we believe custom framing should preserve your memories — not compromise them.

If you’re looking for professional, conservation-grade jersey framing done with care, we’re always happy to help.
